Origins of the Pin-Up Girl.
So, while watching that documentary in class, i couldn't help but wonder "when and how did this dreamworld for men come about?" My theory was that the original Pin-Up girls started it. I've heard that these posters of women lollygagging in their underwear were created to occupy men fighting wars so that they could focus their mind on something other than how much they missed their families or the risk of dying.
I found an article that proved me right. (link on bottom) The Pin up was in fact, created to help keep men fighting in WWII "Morale". But also, i learned that pinups were also designed as a feminist act. the article stated " Pin up is not a mere sex symbolism but a bold feminist act of eliminating the norm of women’s restrictions in a patriarchal world". i was confused because i just don't understand how pin-ups aren't sex symbols? what is so empowering about being almost naked? (maybe i'm looking at this with the wrong view?) i understand that they were protesting how oppressed they were because they weren't allowed to do anything but i feel that this movement jumpstarted how women are portrayed in the media today.
what do you guys think? can someone enlighten me?? :)

This is a really interesting tophic you bring up, and the article is very interesting. I think I would have to say that at irs original state way back when yes pin up was a feminist movement. Maybe that makes me sound dumb or anti feminism,i don't know. But I think Pin Ups first allowed women to break free of the homemaker role and show off their sexuality, a personal characteristic they had never before had been allowed to show before. It is as we said in class, expressing sexuality is powerful. However I think today we have gotten off track in the media and the true reasons for expressing female sexuality are not anything related to the feminist act or real women wanting to express themselves.
ReplyDeleteThis is so true. I did no that the pin-up girl was used to keep men from fighting. However, I still do think it is a sex symbol.
ReplyDeleteI can understand the original origins of the Pin Up Girl but I feel like society has distorted what was then s freeing from the "Susie homemaker role." I think nowadays its progressed way further than that,
