I knew that there were a lot of images that were "anti-feminist" to be found all over the internet. Plenty of these images are very blatant about their disagreement with feminism, but coming across Olivia Waite's Pinterest Board titled "Humorless Feminist Shrew" opened my eyes to the fact that anti-feminist messages are present in a lot of things that we (women) tend to view as "funny" or "cute," because we don't realize their underlying meanings. Although I don't agree with everything on Olivia's board (some of her commentary seems a little extreme, in my opinion), she does bring up a lot of good and interesting points about images that we see every day. For example, this ecard:
I think this one is a particularly good example of something that most people, including women, would normally just laugh at and move on. But what happens when you think of it on a deeper level? Why does accusing a man of being on his "man-period" act as an insult toward him? The answer is because you're comparing him to a woman. As Olivia said in her commentary: "What better way of insulting another man than to compare him to a woman? And a menstruating woman at that." I would have to agree with her here- this "joke" would be nonexistent if women were not considered inferior to men. By referring to a man as a "menstruating woman," we are implying that he is a weaker, more fragile human being, incapable of dealing with and controlling his emotions, especially during menstruation.
Like I said, I don't agree with everything that Olivia posts on her board, however, she hits on a lot of interesting points. So, if you have Pinterest, you should definitely check out her board: http://www.pinterest.com/owaite/humorless-feminist-shrew/ .
