Lie to Me

Alright, so this post goes back to our class discussion of the music industry. Although we focused more on the objectification of the female body and personality in music videos, and we talked more about rap music and songs by men, this song is actually by a woman, and doesn’t even involve a music video. I’m not really sure what made me think of this song recently, as I’m pretty sure it was something that I listened to in junior high. I don’t think it was every actually popular, and I don’t remember where I ended up hearing it. Back then I probably thought it was some awesome love song, not actually understanding what the lyrics meant. Looking at the lyrics now leads me to the realization that this song is just plain creepy. It’s called “Lie to Me” by Trish Thùy Trang (yeah… I have no idea either). Anyway, here’s part of the lyrics:

So lie to me and say that you'll never leave,
I promise that I'll believe.
Don't wanna be all alone.
So lie to me and say what I want to hear
As long as I have you near.
I know I can carry on.

As you probably tell just from this, the song is basically just this girl singing about the fact that she will never find love, but that she is so desperate to do so that she will even settle for the temporary illusion of it. I don’t know about her, but I definitely don’t enjoy being lied to. I think I’d rather be alone!

  1. While I feel that music doesn't always have to be positive and uplifting and can just be used as an emotional and creative outlet, I find it very sad that this song is an actual representation of what many women feel because society tells them they need to be in relationships and if they aren't then something is wrong with them. I definitely agree that if I had the choice of being lied to or being alone, being alone sounds much better!

  2. I definitely wouldn't want someone to lie to me just so I feel loved. Personally, I don't think that would help my self-esteem at all. I would feel like, "Wow, they don't really love me but they are saying they do because I asked them to." It is really sad that girls typically feel this way. Society does place a big emphasis on women being in relationships, more so the older they get. There is nothing wrong with a woman being single, but it seems like it is really looked down upon when that woman is over 30. Before 30, I feel like people in society don't say much because it's like, "Oh, she's young. She has time." But when the woman gets to be over 30 it's like people start thinking she is getting old and is running out of time. It is amazing how much of an affect society's expectations have on us.

  3. I biggest phobia is being lied to. I really value love, and if I am lied to about love, that is so not cool. Women should not be that desperate as to want men to lie to them in order to find love. This shows that the woman who wrote those lyrics did not love herself. In order for someone else to truly love you, you must love yourself.

  4. What you bring up is so true and its sad that women in the music industry project images just as damaging as men in the music industry do.
