Happy Halloween!

One of my Facebook friends posted this powerful video.

http://www.upworthy.com/watch-these-4-girls-destroy-the-female-stereotype-like-the-monsters-they-are-rw1-9b

It revolves around the much-talked-about topic of women's Halloween costumes.  It's slam poetry, so it's a really interesting and different way to have this discussion.  It's a truly captivating display and the women hold attention with their intellect and devotion to their purpose.  I love it because they focus on portraying women as powerful human beings who should be in complete control of their own bodies.

My favorite part of the video is when the women emphasize the value of choice-
"A woman dressing, acting or being should be her choice.  If a woman wants to wear a skimpy outfit, let it be her choice.  If a woman wants to cover up, let it be her choice."

So, my fellow feminists, for this Halloween I encourage you to dress however you want to. Because what we wear, how we act, or who we are, as much on Halloween as on any other day, is our choice.

  1. I also loved the fact that they emphasized the way a woman dresses on Halloween as being her own choice. As much as I disagree with a lot of the costumes out there and would never wear them myself, I think it's important to recognize that even when we're telling women to "cover up" rather than show off their bodies, we're still telling them what to do with their bodies. How they choose to dress is their own personal choice, not anyone else's!

    1. I totally agree! I like how they're not slut-shaming anyone; they're just saying we should be able to do what we want regardless of societal pressures.

  3. I agree with both of you girls. I really like how they emphasized what a woman wears is her choice. I was looking at halloween costumes last night on this website, and I could literally count on one hand the number of outfits I saw that weren't "sexy." Dressing sexy is totally fine and can be fun, but the point of most outfits being "sexy" nowadays is not because of this; instead, the point is to give the image that men want to see. Like the music industry and many other industries, halloween seeks to appeal to the male fantasy. This is obvious in the way many female costumes are named and how they look.

  4. I completely agree that if a girl wants to dress skimpy she can (especially on Halloween when you get to be out of character so if you wanna put on the sexy persona why not?) but that it shouldn't be because that's what she expects people to want her to look like or the only option for her to dress like from store costumes.
