Powerpuff Girls

So today as I was taking a study break looking at funny cat gifs, I found this article about the Powerpuff girls!

I hope that all of you had the fortune of watching this cartoon as a kid because it was awesome! These three girl sisters fighting crime, saving their city, and enjoying their lives with their single father Professor Utonium! I always liked this show, but upon reading the article I found a greater appreciation for it, these girls are SUPERHEROS in their own right they were created that way and aren't derivations of other male superhero counterparts like BatGirl and SpiderGirl etc. There are a lot of really fun parts of this series that do well to break the 'normal' family style with the RowdyRuff Boys having two dads!

My favorite part of this is when what is supposed to be similar to the Justice League leader tells the Powerpuff girls there are certain roles men and women have to fill.

When this guy tried to teach the girls about gender roles….

  1. This was really fun to read. I used to watch the PowerPuff Girls when I was a kid, it was one of my favorite shows. I had no idea that this show pushed to question society's norms of what "male" and "female" roles are - very cool.

  2. This show along with my wonderful mother is one of the reasons I am the way I am today. I've been trying to save the world since I was like 7, and I always was ButterCup.

  3. Laughed out loud at this and shared it with all the girls on my floor! The funniest thing is that we wouldn't have caught that as children, I like how subtly it was slipped in to the show!

  5. I thought this was so funny and interesting!! I used to watch this show with my little sister all the time too and I never caught on to any of these references as a child. I love how they addressed gender stereotypes in a children's TV show not to mention the fact that the protagonists are female superheroes with a single dad!

  6. This is awesome! It's so funny how I never picked up on any of that when I was younger, but now it's so obvious. Love it!
